The most notable was Bob Miller, who tried exotic farming (e.g. angora rabbits) and early tourism ventures. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Ships<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/quarantineisland.org.nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/a_Waikana.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1501\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/quarantineisland.org.nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/a_Waikana.jpg\" alt=\"a_Waikana\" class=\"wp-image-1501\" width=\"581\" height=\"281\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The <em>Waikana<\/em> (above) loaded with passengers. She took excursions to the island and other places and was certified for 800, but often exceeded this! The design of the Waikana (35 m) and her sister\u00a0 ship the Waireka was so successful a &#8216;big sister&#8217;, the Earnslaw (50 m), was also built.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <em>Oreti<\/em> (former Baden Powell, New South Wales 1902) carried timber from Stewart Island and Port Craig to Dunedin until being brought to the island for dismantling in 1932. Her timbers of\u00a0 Australian jarrah can be seen in various part of the Island. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The remains of the <em>Waikana<\/em> (1909) and the <em>Oreti<\/em> (1902) are still visible alongside the causeway <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Byrd&#8217;s Dogs<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Bob Miller brought thousands of visitors to see Commander Byrd&#8217;s Antarctic dogs in late 1928 (4000 on one day!) on the <em>Waikana<\/em> and the <em>Waireka<\/em>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/quarantineisland.org.nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Byrds-dogs-SW-QI-1928.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1495\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/quarantineisland.org.nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Byrds-dogs-SW-QI-1928-555x259.jpg\" alt=\"Byrds dogs SW QI 1928\" class=\"wp-image-1495\" width=\"638\" height=\"298\" srcset=\"https:\/\/quarantineisland.org.nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Byrds-dogs-SW-QI-1928-555x259.jpg 555w, https:\/\/quarantineisland.org.nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Byrds-dogs-SW-QI-1928-768x359.jpg 768w, https:\/\/quarantineisland.org.nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Byrds-dogs-SW-QI-1928-624x292.jpg 624w, https:\/\/quarantineisland.org.nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Byrds-dogs-SW-QI-1928.jpg 929w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 638px) 100vw, 638px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The captains of the dog teams (above) with dogs in front of what had been the single women&#8217;s quarters of the Quarantine Station. This building had been closed four years before and was already partly dismantled. Ninety dogs were rested (not quarantined) on the Island on the way to Antarctica. They and their handlers stayed for a month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Extending the Lodge<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Extending the Lodge with parts of the &#8216;Modern Joinery&#8217; exhibit from the &#8216;NZ and South Seas Exhibition 1925-1926&#8217;. Much of the exterior of the current Lodge comes from this material, particularly stained glass.
