{"id":101,"date":"2019-02-06T21:03:02","date_gmt":"2019-02-06T08:03:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/opdesign.oid.co.nz\/2013\/web-portfolio\/liangyu\/island\/?page_id=101"},"modified":"2026-01-12T10:13:47","modified_gmt":"2026-01-11T21:13:47","slug":"health-and-safety","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/quarantineisland.org.nz\/index.php\/visit\/health-and-safety\/","title":{"rendered":"Health and Safety"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Please be mindful that COVID-19 &amp; Influenza and other illnesses continue to circulate in the community.&nbsp; While masks are no longer mandatory, we ask&nbsp;you postpone your visit if you are feeling unwell.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Wash your hands frequently or use hand sanitiser.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Please stay away if you are feeling unwell.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Don\u2019t enter the Lodge, unless you have been invited to do so by the Keeper, or are part of a group that has booked the Lodge for an overnight stay.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n\t<div id=\"text-3167019048\" class=\"text\">\n\t\t\n\n<div><span style=\"font-size: 23.040000915527344px;\" <=\"\" li=\"\">\n<p><\/p><\/span><\/div>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">Quarantine Island &#8211; Health and Safety<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The Community has identified the following hazards and suggested management&nbsp;strategies for the safety of all visitors to Quarantine Island.<\/p>\n<p>Hazards and management&nbsp;strategies for the safety of all visitors to Quarantine Island.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Take care when you are walking around<strong>. Tracks on the island are uneven<\/strong>, narrow and can be slippery.&nbsp; Wear appropriate closed footwear with grip on the soles.<\/li>\n<li>There are a number of <strong>steep or unstable cliffs<\/strong> and slopes around the coast of&nbsp;the Island. Please do not go near these for your own safety (and also to avoid disturbing&nbsp;the shags, which nest there).<\/li>\n<li>The <strong>wrecks of the ships<\/strong>, Waikana (steel) and the Oreti (wood), are <strong>unsafe and fragile<\/strong> so are out&nbsp;of bounds to all visitors. Please do not kayak or swim around\/over them.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Rocky shores<\/strong> often have sharp rocks or barnacles that can cut feet or hands. They are also slippery. Please wear appropriate footwear in these areas at all times, especially since&nbsp;shallow water can often be opaque.<\/li>\n<li>The Island has <strong>hazards like those of a farm<\/strong>. There are some electric fences for the sheep but they are usually off. Please leave gates as you find them.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Keep out of private and out of bounds areas<\/strong> \u2013 the Keeper\u2019s cottage, sheds, behind (east side) of the Lodge (building\/other waste; cliffs).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Building work<\/strong> and repairs are ongoing. Be careful and keep off scaffolding.<\/li>\n<li>For any boating\/kayaking activities using the Community&#8217;s equipment, you must ask the Keeper first.<\/li>\n<li>Please ensure that a responsible person supervises <strong>children in the play area<\/strong> at&nbsp;all times.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Tidal currents<\/strong> affect swimming off the jetty adult supervision is required. The Dougall bay and Big Bay beaches are safe for swimming but adult&nbsp;supervision is recommended.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Sharp broken glass<\/strong> and pottery occasionally surface through soil and sand in&nbsp;some areas; please pick up any such hazardous objects and dispose of safely.<\/li>\n<li>There may be <strong>bait stations<\/strong> around buildings or near tracks (blue baits in green or yellow pipes). Do not handle or eat. There may also be traps in wooden boxes.<\/li>\n<li>The Island is a Conservation Area \u2013 <strong>do not light any fires<\/strong> outdoors and no&nbsp;dogs are allowed. Candles are not allowed inside any buildings, except for the&nbsp;Chapel, for safety reasons.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Smoking including vaping<\/strong> is only allowed on the far end of the jetty. Used matches and cigarette ends must&nbsp;be placed in the designated metal ash bin. Keep matches and lighters in a safe and secure place. No vaping in buildings.<\/li>\n<li>The Chapel may be used with respect. Please use candles in the Chapel in&nbsp;moderation and extinguish them when leaving.<\/li>\n<li>The Community does not encourage excessive drinking of alcohol.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>In the event of&nbsp;fire or earthquake emergencies, the initial assembly point is on the grassy slope between the Cottage and the line of macrocarpas. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The buildings have interlinked smoke alarms.
