Sunday 25th February 2018 : Biodiversity monitoring on Quarantine Island Kamau Taurua. Reporting back on our Curious Minds-funded citizen science project.

Come over to hear more about this project. Whose footprints have been seen on the tracking cards? Which parts of the Island are predators active? How did we measure seedling, skink, moth and bird activity? What do (and don’t) the results tell us? What’s next?

Sat 25 -Sun. 26 Nov. 2017 Art retreat Talk about your process; how do you try to work sustainably? In terms of materials, staying solvent, and keeping the creative energy flowing! Relax; explore, create. An informal, loosely structured event facilitated by Becky Cameron.

Saturday 28 October 2017 Barndance with the amazing Catgut & Steel. The dance goes from 7pm-10pm, but of course, you’ll also need time for boat travel, and to enjoy walking around the island with its stunning views in every direction!

Sun. 22nd October 2017: Harbour Heritage Festival open day and heritage film screenings.’On the rocks, in the drink and on the wing’. The Film Heritage Trust, in partnership with Heritage New Zealand Pouhere Taonga, bring you a special selection of historical movies extracts from around Otago Harbour.
Venue:  Married Persons’ Quarters, Quarantine Island, Otago Harbour.

26/8/17 Whenua me tuhituhi / Writing in relationship with the land: A one-day workshop on Quarantine Island/Kamau Taurua facilitated by Robyn Maree Pickens and Iona Winter (Waitaha, Kāi Tahu).

Dolphins on 28 Jan. 2017 open day: A wonderful open day on the Island recently, became even more magical when a pod of dolphins swam alongside the boat returning people to Portobello. Thanks to John McLachlan and Monarch Wildlife Cruises for giving us extra time to enjoy the dolphins! Here’s a video (Thanks to Regan Mooney).

In Dec.2016 – Jan. 2017 we had a wonderful view from the Lodge of the Little Shags nesting. Here is a video of them in a strong Southerly. (Thanks Rauhina Scot-Fyfe).

October 2015  – Art and Sustainability Hui

The Community hosted psychologist and author, Niki Harre. Niki facilitated two workshops in town, in partnership with Otago Polytechnic, on the psychology of change. Niki was also our guest at an ‘Art and Sustainability Hui ‘on the Island. Special thanks to all those who helped with organising and running these events.


Sunday 20th September 2015 –  Kotahitanga manaaki te kawa World Peace Day 2015

Quarantine Island/Kamau Taurua Community were delighted to have a stall at the Peace day event, organised by Peacing Together, a not for profit group that formed in March 2015, consisting of Artists, Event Creators, Community Facilitators and students from the National Centre for Peace and Conflict Studies. The event was a wonderful opportunity for everyone to come together celebrating our unity within diversity in Dunedin.

Saturday 29th August 2015. We participated in  Dunedin Heritage Festival’s ‘Open City’ .

Sunday 26th April 2015 Shot At Dawn 

The Quarantine Island Kamau Taurua Community, in support of elder Lyndall Hancock, decided to commemorate five New Zealand soldiers, executed in Europe following court-martial. Two of the soldiers were from Canterbury and three from Otago regiments.  (more information…)
