We were overwhelmed with the quality and range of applications for the ‘ Quarantine Island / Kamau Taurua Artist in Residence’ on the Island, including poets, writers, a playwright/ performer, photographers, painters, musicians, print-makers, and illustrators. It was extremely difficult to choose one person from the seventeen applicants. In the end we chose two very different artists whose intended work and way of working seemed closely aligned to the QIKT Community’s objectives : Lynn Taylor and Eli Joseph.
Lynn is a print-maker and visual artist, living in Macandrew Bay; Eli a contemporary circus theatre artist from Wellington. Lynn used her time to experiment further with cyanotype printing, and other explorations.
Eli spent time adapting the biography of Archibald Baxter, We will not cease, into a draft script for a physical theatre production. Archibald Baxter was an Otago farmer, arrested as a conscientious objector during WW1, and forced to the front lines.
In addition, we offered short retreats to four other artists, Jo St Baker, Brigid Allen, Kirstin Bebell and Iona Winters.
